Focus View for Scorecards: Simplifying Complex KPI Hierarchies

Focus View helps you work with complex scorecards by emphasizing the selected item and its immediate context while keeping the overall strategy structure visible.

Why Focus View Helps With Complex Scorecards

Real-world strategy implementations become complex. According to our Strategy Execution Architecture Benchmark 2026, the median scorecard contained approximately 44 KPIs, while the 90th percentile reached approximately 79 KPIs per scorecard.

As a strategy is decomposed into objectives, KPIs, and initiatives, displaying everything with the same visual emphasis can make it harder to concentrate on the part of the strategy you are currently working with.

Focus View addresses this by emphasizing the selected item and its immediate context while keeping the rest of the scorecard visible in the background.

The goal is to let teams work with detailed strategy architectures without making complex scorecards unnecessarily difficult to navigate.

Previous View vs. Focus View

Compare these two scorecard views.

Previous Scorecard View

Here is the previous view with the “Cost of Poor Quality” item selected.

KPI table: old view with complexity due to details displayed for all KPIs

The entire KPI tree was displayed using the same visual emphasis. While this provided a complete view of the scorecard, larger scorecards could feel overloaded with details that were not relevant to what you were working on at that moment.

New Focus View

Here is the same scorecard using the new Focus View, with the same “Cost of Poor Quality” item selected.

New Focus View emphasizes the selected item and its relevant context, while other items remain visible in light grey to reduce visual distraction.

Items in its immediate context are displayed normally, including:

  • its parent;
  • other items at the same level with the same parent;
  • its immediate child items.

All other scorecard items remain visible, but they are displayed in light grey to reduce visual distraction while preserving the overall scorecard structure.

Focus View does not hide or remove any scorecard data. It only changes the visual emphasis so that you can concentrate on the selected part of the hierarchy while still seeing where it belongs within the broader strategy.

How to Enable Focus View

Focus View is activated for all default KPI profiles.

If you use your own KPI profile, you can activate it by:

  1. Clicking “Edit” next to the KPI profile.

Edit KPI profile by clicking the Edit button next to the KPI profile name

  1. Clicking “Edit” again to modify the profile.

Click the edit profile button

  1. Selecting the “Focus mode” checkbox.

Use the Focus Mode checkbox to enable or disable the focus mode

How to Disable Focus View

If you prefer the previous display, you can create or edit your own KPI profile and disable Focus mode specifically for that profile.

This allows different KPI profiles to use different visualization approaches depending on how you prefer to work with your scorecards.
